The ozarks contains a variety of unique ecosystems such as caves, wetlands and glades, which provide habitats for unique animals. Cave salamanders, pickerel frogs and even endangered gray bats and ozark cavefish are perfectly at home in the dark, cool confines of cave. Great blue heron, alligator snapping turtles and wood ducks stick to the marshy comforts of the wetlands. Eastern collared lizards, red milk snakes and tarantulas thrive in the desert-like conditions of ozark glades. Just take a walk and you’re sure to at least hear the sound of an eastern gray squirrel or a three-toed box turtle rustling through the leaves on the forest floor. Click through the fauna tab to discover the fascinating insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that call the ozarks home.
