From cattail to cactus, the Ozarks definitely has a wide variety of botanical beauty to observe. Spring brings splashes of color to the forest with yellow, fragrant spicebush blooms, lovely white flowering dogwood and deep red wake robin flowers. Summer is a delight with periwinkle roadside chicory, purple coneflower and cheerfully orange butterfly weed. Watch for the fiery bright leaves of sassafras, virginia creeper and silver maple in the fall, as well as the stunning purple berries of the American beauty berry shrub. Even winter can showcase some pretty plants such as ozark witch hazel, deciduous holly and frost flowers, which really aren’t flowers at all, but icy ribbons that are formed when water is pushed through the broken stems of woody plants creating a delicate bundle in the likeness of a flower. The Ozarks is even home to an endangered plant called the Missouri Bladderpod. With a name like that, you’re probably anxious to learn more! Click through the flora tab to find out more about the trees, shrubs, flowers and vines you may encounter while exploring the ozark mountains
