War Eagle Trail is located within Withrow Springs State Park near Huntsville, Arkansas. To get to the park from Huntsville, drive five miles north on Arkansas Hwy. 23 until you reach the Withrow Springs State Park entrance. There is a parking lot at the War Eagle Trailhead, allowing for easy access to the trail. The dirt trail is two-miles long there and back and includes a 56-foot gain in elevation. There are several spots along the path where hikers have to traverse a ledge with wire railing running along it. Take caution in rainy or wet conditions as the rock can easily become slippery. There is a picturesque view of War Eagle Creek from the top of the trail, and there is also a small and large cave that is right along the trail. The caves are not always accessible to the public, however. War Eagle Trail is open year-round and dogs are allowed on the trail as long as they stay on leash.
Forest Trail is located within Withrow Springs State Park also. There is a parking lot at the campground, which is a short walk from the trailhead. This dirt path follows the route of an old roadway on the west side of the park and runs northeast to southwest. The trail traverses the woodlands area of the park along a 1.25-mile route. It is an ideal place to see different animals including squirrels and deer. The woods are forested primarily by oak and hickory trees. Forest Trail is open to visitors year-round.
Dogwood Trail trailhead is located at the park campground where parking is available. This three-quarter mile dirt trail is a loop that starts and ends at the campground, and requires a good amount of hiking uphill which makes it a moderate difficulty level. The trail is named for the many flowering dogwood trees that line its path, making it particularly beautiful and colorful in the spring. Dogwood Trail runs through the wooded hillside in the park, and across several ridges and hills. There are also springs and seepages along the trail that provide water for the ferns that cover a shaded ravine near the path. It is a nice hike in the springtime when both the dogwoods and the wildflowers are blooming in the hills. Dogwood Trail is open year-round.
